Description
This is a large collection of Victorian jet jewelry which consists of a carved locket with photo and plaited hair, a carved pendant with plaited hair on the reverse side, a necklace with carved drops, and a substantial long chunky chain. They are all in original antique condition.
The locket is carved with the motto, "IMO", In Memory Of, a portrait of the loved one on one side and plaited hair on the other. The cover is beautifully done and deeply carved. The locket measures 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" x  3/4" deep not counting the jump rings at top. The double sided pendant is carved with the motto, "AIE" for Amity, Eternity, Infinity. It is an eternal love pendant measuring 2" x 1 1/2", not including the wide jet jump ring. The drop necklace is 17 1/2" long made of carved graduated links and graduated carved drops. The center link measures 1 1/8" x 3/4" x almost 1/4" thick. The largest drop measures 1 1/4" long. The chain is intricately carved with alternating cross hatched links and 8 sided faceted links. The largest link measures 1 1/4" x 3/4". The chain measures 22" long including the typical black enamel covered hook and eye.
Condition is excellent except for the locket which is missing jet on the case back on the edge. All other pieces are in excellent condition with very few tiny chips as expected. The locket clasp is tight, the unusual push pin clasp on the necklace is tight and intact.
I have photographed the pieces in the padded box where they were found. These pieces belonged to my aunt and were probably inherited from my Grandpa who was British. I don't believe they were original to the box but don't know. The box is silk satin lined and marked London Made and 1618 Westow St. Norwood, Gaydon & Sons Jewelers & Silversmiths & AT, 20 Whitefriar Gate, Hull. I have only included the box as a reference. It is NOT part of this auction.
Weight of jewelry not counting the packing materials is 157 grams.
