    Description

    Shou-sugi-ban Cryptomeria Wood Japanese Tanuki Sculpture.
    Condition is excellent, little wear.  Stands 4 3/4 inches plus hat.  Nice tight grain on the wood. Glass eyes.
    Shou Sugi Ban is a Japanese technique for preserving by charring the wood.
    This item was made/purchased in the late 50's.
    The Tanuki may be known as the Japanese racoon dog.  There's some interesting and amusing folklore associated with the Tanuki shape shifting spirit.
    A great addition for those who appreciate Japanese culture and mythology.
