    Description

Rare example of jet strung on wire to design a beautiful butterfly adornment, once a mourning brooch.  The body of the butterfly is believed to be jet, as well.   The clasp to secure the brooch (previously attached to the inside of butterfly tail, see pic 4) is no longer available but it was attached when I purchased it about 25 years ago, however, a replacement clasp can easily be reattached.   This item would be wonderful to embellish a hat or other period garment.    This item is from the Victorian era...around 1880s.
Width Measurement:  Between outside front wing tip to outside of opposite wing tip is 3 inches.
Between outside back wing tip to outside of opposite wing tip is 2 1/2 inches.
Length Measurement:  Between end of tentacle to end of butterfly approximately 4 inches.
Jet is strung on wire so the butterfly body, wings, and tentacles all can be molded as desired.
