In today's market, all standard bases are 39 mm in diameter. There are two kinds: the flat top (first generation) and grooved top (second generation). We only sell the second generation grooved top.
1) On the surface, you may think the flat top is more versatile. The flat-top can take either 38 or 40 mm discs, but the grooved top can only take 38 mm. The first problem is how ugly the 40 mm is at the rim. The aluminum discs were not coated on the side, so an overhanging aluminum side will sour your customer's eyes (check out the 3rd picture). Also, the disc may have imperfections on the edge, caused by the manufacturing process. Manufacturers coat the sheet metal first and then use a circular stamp-cutter to make the disc. The coating may b chapped from the edge. When you transfer a dark black background, the background will show the imperfection against the white/silver rim. These problems are solved by using a grooved top. The plate will fit inside the groove nicely. Customers won't see the silver side (see picture 4). The whole rim is wrapped around by the base. Thus, the finished product will have a smooth, professional look.
2) Secondly, the groove will protect the discs from side-impact and make it less likely to fall out or worn out. You will have less worry that the glue is not strong enough. Nor you will need to fear the sublimation coating be worn out from the edge.
This listing is for the grooved top. It will only take 38 mm aluminum plates. Make sure you have 38 mm discs. We will charge a 20% restocking fee if you have the wrong disc size.
