Six stamps alluding to the Program for the Evaluation of the Sustainable Potential of Living Resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone (Revizee) are on sale at the central post office in the Santo Antônio neighborhood. The sextile, as the philatelists call it, features images of the rotor dolphin, sea turtle, São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago, atobá (a migratory bird found on oceanic islands), a diver and a research boat.
The stamps were officially released on May 5 in Brasilia. From the 19th to the 24th of this month, they will be shown in Australia'99 - World Philatelic Exhibition. The event, which has the theme "The Maritime Heritage", will be held in the city of Melbourne, Australia.
The symbolic launch in Recife, where the regional coordination of Revizee to the Northeast, has not yet been scheduled, reports to the head of the Post Office Philately Post Office, Helena Moura.
The drawings are by the carioca artist Mauro Campello and are 35 by 25 millimeters. With a print run of 3.6 million - 600 thousand of each - the stamps were printed at the Brazilian Mint. The price of each stamp is R $ 0.31, corresponding to the first national corporate size.
Helena Moura recalls that Revizee was started three years ago and aims to survey the living resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The area is a maritime strip that extends up to 200 nautical miles from the coast (about 370 km). Under the program, Brazil intends to guarantee maritime sovereignty over the EEZ.
The stamps also allude to the Archipelago of São Pedro and São Paulo, in the Atlantic Ocean, the most remote point of the national territory. Researchers at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco are implanting a scientific station along with the Ministry of the Navy. The project, called Proarquipélago, is mentioned in the stamps.
