"THEY SAY THE NEON LIGHTS ARE BRIGHT ON BROADWAY": Jerry Garcia's 17-show stand at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on 46th Street in the heart of the Broadway/Times Square district really "broke a leg," as they say along the Great White Way. "The journey from the idea to the reality was long and complex," revealed Steve Parish, the Grateful Dead stage technician who served as the manager for Garcia and his troupe during this affair. It was amazing how an event that surely required a great deal of pre-arranging could be so well kept from the public's knowledge. The ball got rolling in a heap of dispute. The day tickets went on sale at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, prospective ticket buyers on line were confronted by Bill Graham, who was promoting the shows, and asked questions regarding the Grateful Dead. Mr. Graham's purpose was toeliminate from the line those individuals he felt were there to buy tickets and later scalp them. His actions, while certainly admirable in the eyes of any Deadheads, were not permissible by law and when a slew of NYPD's finest arrived, including several mounted police officers, a disaster was imminent. The police quelled the situation and an agreement was reached allowing no ticket-buyer to purchase more than four ducats and allowing no ticketbuyer to get on line again. Mr. Graham was his rambunctious self again, for which he is to be applauded."It required sacrifice and compromise," stated Steve Parish.
