    Fungal Vaginitis
Summer has arrived ... but with the heat and frequent visits to the beach and pools, also make their appearance
the fungal vaginitis afflicting most women, often during the summer, with the appearance of characteristics thick whitish secretions which accompanied by itching, burning and irritation.
According to data from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) of the U.S., up 90% of all women will present at least once in their lives fungal vaginitis while the 40-50% of them will appear two or more episodes, the 15-25% recurrent infection and a significant number showing asymptomatic vaginitis (25%).
Mainly fungal vaginitis caused by an overgrowth of yeast species of Candida albicans, which occurs naturally in the vagina and coexist harmoniously with other microorganisms (mainly lactobacillus) located there, making it the normal flora of the vagina- protective barrier and line of defense in maintaining the health of the bay.
The change in population of lactobacillus has resulted in a change of pH (acidity of the vagina) to less acidic or even alkaline values, reduce the production of hydrogen peroxide that acts inhibit growth of pathogenic microorganisms and create conditions suitable for the growth of anaerobic organisms and species Candida.
Many factors can reduce the population of lactobacillus and disrupt the delicate balance that exists between microorganisms of the vaginal flora resulting in excessive growth of fungi.
The major are increasing temperatures and humidity which observed especially during the summer months due to regular visits to the sea and swimming pools, wearing
wet swimsuit, narrow synthetic underwear and jeans, the intense sexual activity, taking antibiotics, contraceptive use etc. even the daily stress.
Good practice is to ensure maintenance of adequate populations of lactobacillus using probiotic products which directly restore these beneficial microorganisms and reduce the possibility of creating favorable for fungal growth environment.
